“The Malihowski’s put fried onions on their oatmeal!” Mom was sounding off at me again for not eating my oatmeal. What did she expect? Who would eat oatmeal that didn’t have any sugar on it? It was during World War II. Sugar was rationed and Mom was using saccharin, the original sugar substitute, to sweeten my oatmeal. I had no idea how she knew that the Malihowski’s put fried onions on their oatmeal. She knew I hated fried onions and was probably making it up, thinking I would be happy with the saccharin if fried onions was the only other alternative. Mom never looked me in the eye when she was fibbing. I didn’t know what a ‘tell’ was at the time, or how to take advantage of it, but this time Mom definitely was fibbing. And it made me mad. So I screamed. I’d turned seven two weeks before and the screaming, which had been perfectly acceptable behavior until now, set Mom off. When I saw her reach for the catty-nine tails which she kept hanging on a hook in the pantry, I made a beeline for the front door with Mom in hot pursuit.

None of this has anything to do with poker, but it sets my mood for the day on which I played penny-ante for the first time. A total wager is a bet on the combined number of points scored in the game by both teams. You can bet on whether the actual number of total points scored is over or under the line posted. The total points scored includes points scored in overtime.

 

You can also bet whether the combined number of points or goals scored in the game will be over or under the total set by the oddsmaker. For example, if the total is 32 and you believe that the combined points scored will exceed that number, you would bet over 32.

 

This is really another form of straight bet and the payoff is also $10 for every $11 bet. Again, if the total is exactly on the line, it is a push or tie and your original bet is refunded.

 

Sports Betting – The Moneyline

Baseball games and some other sports events are handled a little differently than football, basketball and hockey. Oddsmakers don’t set a point spread for baseball games. Instead, they set a moneyline. The moneyline gives the odds that one team will beat another.

 

There is a different moneyline total for either side on a moneyline bet, a negative side (the favorite) and a positive side (the underdog). For example, Seattle -170 LA +150 means that Dallas is the favorite and for every $170 you bet on Dallas, you win $100 if they win.

 

For every $100 you bet on Washington – the underdog – you win $150 if they win. By offering different odds for each team, the sportsbook is able to balance action on both teams.

A prominent Irish player took a suite in the Ritz during the Barcelona tournament of the European Poker Tour. He was watching the final of the EPT and got very unlucky, because he’d had a few drinks and then Tall Ed from Amsterdam won a huge pot in the Omaha cash game and very generously started sending around free drinks for everybody who was watching the tournament. And then Tall Ed very generously did it again; and again; and again. So, the Irish player finally made his way back to the Ritz and made it to his suite, but woke up the next morning about a yard away from the king-size bed, hung over and cold on the floor, and about to face a large bill for the privilege of sleeping in the room, to boot. Well, he’s been claiming it was a bad beat, because had he taken a regular room, he would have made it to the bed, as the bed in a standard room is ever so much closer to the door.

 

That leads straight into another suite story, and this one happened during the EPT event in Dublin. WASHINGTON — Osama bin Laden is not, according to news reports, a terribly big fan of Western vices.

Nor has there been any reliable confirmation that last month’s suicide-hijackers, who completed the bloodiest terrorist attack in American history, were habitual gamblers.

But that didn’t stop the House Financial Services committee from voting 62-1 on Thursday for an “anti-terrorism” bill that limits Internet gambling.

In the words of Rep. Marge Roukema (R-New Jersey): “We’ve heard testimony from the FBI, the Department of Justice, and law enforcement that there is a clean nexus, a connection, between Internet gambling and money laundering of terrorism activities.”

The measure has been dubbed the “Financial Anti-Terrorism Act” (PDF), and it prohibits financial institutions from accepting credit cards, electronic transfers and checks used in online gambling. Another part of the 121-page bill gives the Customs Service more power to inspect packages sent through the mail.

While all but one of the committee voted for the bill with the gambling prohibitions included, legislators did spend some time arguing about it first.

Rep. Michael Castle (R-Delaware), who unsuccessfully tried to remove the language through an amendment, said: “My concern is we’re imposing an obligation on financial companies to check virtually all of their statements, especially customers who deal with websites.”

Castle’s amendment, which would have deleted almost all of the gambling-related sections, failed by a vote of 25-37.

The vote wasn’t a partisan one: Some Republicans applauded Castle’s proposal, saying that otherwise the bill would slap an undue burden on banks and credit card firms, while others were eager to hand more power to police.

Rep. Jim Leach (R-Iowa) lauded additional restrictions on online gambling, saying: “What we’re talking about is an illegal act today, and we want the enforcement of current laws today.”
